Schools in the Cherbourg and Gympie local government regions will be closed this Monday due to the widespread flooding.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced these school closures today along with schools closed in the local government areas of Brisbane, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Somerset, Gold Coast, Logan, Redlands, Scenic Rim, Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Lockyer Valley will be closed as severe weather impacts parts of Queensland.
Cherbourg’s Gundoo Early Learning Centre will also be closed on Monday.
The Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council reported that as of 5pm Sunday, 27 February more water was coming up from Bjelke Petersen Dam.
As of 5.30pm Sunday, the Bjelke Petersen Dam was at 123.84%, according to Sunwater. The dam was at 116.11% Saturday at 7pm and was 102.26% on Friday.
The Bureau of Meteorogy and Sunwater says Barambah Creek will likely rise overnight and Big Shot Fisher Bridege will be closed on Sunday night and Monday.
The South Burnett Regional Council Local Government Management Group advises that flooding will continue across the region particularly along Barkers Creek and Barambah Creek.
At this stage it is expected that the Burnett Highway will re-open Monday afternoon following
Department of Transport & Main Roads bridge inspections and repairs.
The Bunya Highway at Krebs Bridge and access to Cherbourg is expected to be cut until at least Tuesday afternoon with the peak spill from Bjelke-Petersen Dam expected tomorrow morning with a level of 127%. Please note that Council is aware that there is extensive damage to Krebs Bridge, and it is likely that it will not re-open until sometime Thursday.
It is expected that the extensive damage to the road network will take weeks and months to repair
particularly following back-to-back weather events from Ex-Tropical Cyclone Seth. The community
is asked to report road damage to 4189 9100.
