Firefighters have issued a ‘stay informed’ warning for Proston and surrounds after a previously-contained grass fire broke its boundaries, resuming movement.
The Queensland Fire Department dispatched four crews to the scene of a half-acre vegetation fire on Butler Drive, north-west of the Proston township, just after 12pm on 17 July.
Over the course of the following half-hour, at 12:46pm firies managed to contain the blaze, with a spokesperson for the QFD reporting the matter was under control.
Around an hour and a half later, at 2:25pm, the QFD issued a warning to residents of Proston and surrounding areas, urging locals to ‘stay informed’ regarding the fire. As of writing eight crews of firefighters are at the scene of the blaze attempting to reign in the flames.
QFD’s spokesperson could not confirm if the fire had grown in size between noon and the release of the warning, or which direction the flames were moving in.
The department’s warning cautions locals and passing motorists that access to Proston Boondomma Road could be blocked as a result of the fire.
As of writing the QFD has not committed aerial firefighting assets to the Proston blaze; the department maintains the fire is still not threatening any nearby structures or people.
The Queensland Fire Department urges those living in the area to:
– Stay informed because conditions could change;
– Check the QFD Current Bushfires and Warnings website (www.fire.qld.gov.au/Current-Incidents) regularly;
– Follow QFD on Facebook and X.com;
– Listen to your local radio station;
– Tell friends, family and neighbours in the area;
– Decide what you will do if the bushfire gets closer;
– Follow your bushfire survival plan now. If you do not have a bushfire survival plan, make one on the QFD website;
– Decide where you and the people you live with will go. This could be with family or a friend away from the fire;
– Keep medications close by;
– Avoid smoke – stay indoors, close windows and doors, and avoid driving through smoke;
– Watch out for firefighters working in the area;
– Do not fly drones around the fire. Drones affect air operations;
– If your life is in danger, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
