Two young Cherbourg women have been given a boost towards their dreams.

Sienna Murray and Mia Sandow were both awarded Stanwell’s South Burnett First Nations Scholarship at a special community celebration during mid-July.

The two emerging leaders from Cherbourg are both studying at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane and were named the successful recipients of the scholarship dedicated to empowering First Nations students in their pursuit of university education and careers in the energy industry.

Stanwell originally planned to provide one scholarship to an outstanding student, but with two stand-out applications, the government-owned corporation decided to offer two scholarships instead.

Stanwell General Manager Southern Generation, Mick Joy said Stanwell was proud to have been able to award two scholarships to two outstanding young leaders to help amplify the impact of the scholarship.

“We are honoured to support Sienna and Mia as they begin this exciting journey,” Mr Joy said.

“As part of the scholarship, Sienna and Mia will also receive mentoring and vacation work opportunities at Stanwell during their university holidays—providing them with real-world experience and a strong connection to future energy career pathways.”

Mr Joy found Sienna and Mia’s passion inspiring.

“We look forward to seeing the impact they will make on campus, in their communities, and potentially in the energy sector,” he said.

Sienna Murray was grateful for the scholarship and encouraged anyone thinking about applying for it to do it.

“The scholarship has opened up new pathways for me and created exciting opportunities for my future career,” Ms Murray said.

“If you have a goal, believe in yourself and keep going. You can achieve anything.”

The scholarship was made possible through a collaboration between the Wakka Wakka Native Title Aboriginal Corporation Board, Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council, Cherbourg Elders Advisory Group, and the education community.

The South Burnett First Nations Scholarship reflects Stanwell’s commitment to fostering meaningful career pathways for First Nations people, supporting emerging leaders as they embark on their academic journeys and contribute to long-term, positive outcomes for their communities.
