While many Queenslanders are gearing up for their yearly dose of Christmas cheer, for some, it can be a really tough time.
Isolation can impact people’s mental health, leading to feelings of disconnection and an increase in depression and anxiety.
The Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) (Queensland Section) Outback Mental Health team is expecting to see a demand for its services.
Team Manager Donna Ross is encouraging anyone who feels like they are struggling over Christmas to prioritise finding someone to talk to about it.
“It’s a really tough time for many people, particularly those in remote parts of the state,” Donna said.
“If you’re nearest neighbour is hundreds of kilometres away, it’s not that easy to drop in for a cuppa.
“What we encourage people to do is pick up the phone and chat to a friend, a family member or anyone you know and tell them how you’re feeling.
“That first step in is so important in getting someone on the right track towards the help they need.
“We know there’s an increase in stress, both financial and mental, over this period, and it’s vital anyone struggling with their mental health, acknowledges those feelings but proactively begins to undertake strategies to improve their day to day.
“It’s important to do things that make you feel positive or find time to catch up with friends and family.
“It could even be a group you’re a part of, whatever it is, no matter how it feels, you aren’t alone and there’s always someone available to talk to you about what’s going on.
“The overarching message from us is we want people to be kind to themselves and to seek out someone to talk to.
“Whether that’s the RFDS Outback Mental Health team, your Doctor, or any of the other support services, there is help available.”
