Burnett locals were among many Australians excited to capture a glimpse of the Aurora Australis last week.
Typically this phenomenon can only be seen in the far south of Australia, however the conditions of 20 January were so strong that photos were captured as far north as the Burnett and central Queensland.
The Aurora Australis, commonly known as the southern lights, are curtains of lights, rays, and arcs of pulsating red, green, or sometimes even purple light shows.
The Bureau of Meteorology explains that these lights are created from events on the sun -massive solar flares blasting streams of charged particles into the solar wind and outwards towards the Earth.
These particles are then directed by the magnetic field of the Earth where they collide with the atoms in the Earth’s atmosphere, creating the lights.
