In honour of the ANZACs who served and sacrificed, this month of Burnett Junior Writers features poems inspired by the ANZAC Spirit.
Eli Richards is a Year 11 student from Murgon State High School, who calls Tansey home.
Below is his poem, “What they don’t tell”.
Why did they not mention mud, blood and tears,
As we sloped around in the mud filled trenches, and headed over the trench walls,
Running towards the death filled bullets,
Wishing I hadn’t gone, all the boys I once knew, now all men,
Everyone praying to a god that doesn’t seem real,
Reading my letters from home, while bullets whistle over my head.
Wishing it would all end, and let me go home, if there is a place for me to still call home.
Why they didn’t tell us about the mud, blood and tears of war, how it remains a mystery for me.
