IN ACTION: Indigenous league

Cherbourg hosted an incredible day of Indigenous rugby league on Saturday, 2 November.

Indigenous teams from around Queensland gathered at Cherbourg’s Jack O’Chin Oval; the Cherbourg Hornets, the Murgon Mustangs, the Sunshine Coast Bunyas and the Woorabinda Warriors to verse off in a series of games.

The women kicked off the competition with Cherbourg vs Woorabinda, followed by the under-17 boys Cherbourg vs Sunshine Coast Bunyas.

In the afternoon, for the community cup shield the Murgon Mustangs took on the Sunshine Coast Bunyas.

Murgon came to win, absolutely thrashing the Bunyas team, scoring 42 to the Bunyas’ 26.

It was an incredible game, the team’s coach-captain Tarell Leedie thanked the Bunyas for coming all the way to Cherbourg for the great game.

The final game of the day was the Pioneer Shield, with the Cherbourg Hornets versing the Woorabinda Warriors. It started as an incredible team game, showing the men’s strength as they versed for the cup. However, the game was cancelled part way through due to the injuries a player sustained.
