School’s First Nations nod

Students of Kingaroy State High School paid their respects to the South Burnett’s Wakka Wakka people on Remembrance Day by singing the Australian national anthem in language.

The choir of ten, who form the Kingaroy State High School Vocal Group, performed the double a capella anthem -once in Wakka Wakka, and then in English- at the Kingaroy Remembrance Day service at Memorial Park on 11 November.

They were led in song by teacher Sue Dowideit-Reiger, with the Wakka Wakka language translation of the national anthem provided to the school by Murgon State High School’s Tricia Alberts.

Waba-gari dja, yo yumbin ngai garun

*Australians, all let us rejoice,*

gaar nginege ganma borodjam.

*For we are one and free.*

Yaungari galang gung, djaa, djanan

*With golden soil and wealth for toil*

Yoom waaa yaa ngam ngin yanan.

*Our home is girt by sea.*

Ngam-ngin-gari djaa galang djagunbara gu galang-duu, biange, wee.

*Our land abounds in nature’s gifts, of beauty rich and rare*

Nginanguruna binange, Waba-gari dja galang mayan wee.

*In history’s page, let every stage Advance Australia Fair*

Mundjilu duu ngam ngin yumbin gundame, Waba-gari dja galang mayan wee.

*In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia Fair*
