Flood warnings across Burnett

Heavy rainfall and flooding has been experienced across the Burnett over the last few days.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts the rain event will continue for the Wide Bay and Burnett on Monday afternoon and evening, with locally intense falls possible.

“Heavy rainfall continues across south-east Queensland today, but it’s likely to ease overnight tonight and into early Tuesday morning,” Meteorologist Miriam Bradbury said.

Most of the heavier rainfall totals have been focussed across the Wide Bay and Burnett areas, causing flash flooding risks on Monday.

“The wet weather is continuing to be driven by a low pressure trough, and the remnants of a tropical low moving over the area,” Ms Bradbury said.

However, by Tuesday rainfalls are expected to ease off, with riverine flooding expected to continue over the next few days.

RIVER FLOOD WARNINGS

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued major warnings for the Burnett, Stuart and Boyne Rivers, as well as Barker and Barambah Creeks. A flood warning has also been issued for Auburn River.

Major flooding is expected across the Burnett including at Dunollie and Brian Pastures, and is possible at Mundubbera, Gayndah, Stonelands and Walla from Monday afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology predicts moderate rainfall is also possible at Eidsvold Bridge overnight on Monday.

Most of the Burnett river levels are reported as ‘rising’ with significant water heights observed at the following on Monday, 9 March:

• Boyne River at Derra: 13.6m as of 12noon

• Auburn River at Flagstone Bridge: 14.19m as of 12.56pm

• Burnett River at Ned Churchward Weir: 20.38m as of 12.48pm

• Barambah Creek at Stonelands: 10.79m as of 11.55am (topping December 2010 levels of 9.94m)

The Burnett River at Mundubbera was at 13.72m as of 1pm and rising, with moderate flooding.

The Bureau stated that the Burnett River at Mundubbera may exceed the major flood level of 18m by Monday afternoon.

Comparatively, Mundubbera’s Burnett River has reached historic highs of 18.82m in December 2010 and 23m in January 2013.
