The North Burnett Regional Council has placed Gayndah on the highest-possible water restrictions effective immediately, following intense flooding in the region over the weekend and into Monday.
Council made the announcement just after 10am on Wednesday, 11 March, restricting all town water use to tasks inside the home only until further notice.
The restrictions mean Gayndah locals can use their town water for food preparation, personal hygiene and laundry, but not for lawn care, car washing or in swimming pools.
Council made the decision to restrict town water use after the Burnett River took on significant amounts of rain on Monday, with a Bureau of Meteorology gauge at Gayndah recording river height peaks of 14.3 metres – just below the 15-metre ‘major’ flood level.
The NBRC explained the floodwaters “affect[ed] the raw water intake pumps in the Burnett River” necessitating the temporary water restrictions for Gayndah.
“Residents should avoid any unnecessary water use to help maintain supply for essential needs and emergency services,” council’s spokesperson said.
