Smoke warning for Mt Walsh area

Residents around the Biggenden area, near Mt Walsh, may notice smoke from today.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) will conduct planned burn operations within Mt Walsh National Park starting Tuesday, 9 August 2022, as part of the annual hazard reduction/conservation management program for parks and forests.

As a result, smoke may be seen in the Biggenden area.

People with respiratory or other health problems should seek medical advice on mitigating the effects of smoke inhalation and should close windows and doors and keep medications close by if suffering from a respiratory illness.

The aim of the burn is to reduce the volume of grass and forest fuels in sections of Mt Walsh National Park to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas.

This will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent bushfires and provide favourable conditions for natural forest regeneration.

Smoke can decrease visibility on the roads, so it is important that motorists drive safely to the conditions.

Please observe all signage, barriers and directions from rangers and do not enter closed areas.
