Elderly man beaten with stick in attempted burglary

A 70-year-old Wondai man was assaulted and hospitalised after an attempted burglary at his house this week, with police now on the hunt for those responsible.

A spokesperson for the Queensland Police Service reported that, at approximately 4am on Thursday, 8 June, a group of three males allegedly gained entry to the elderly man’s property on Outridge Street, Wondai.

When they encountered the 70-year-old, the group allegedly demanded car keys and a mobile phone from him, then began assaulting him with a wooden stick.

“The trio were unsuccessful in stealing the man’s vehicle, and left the property in a Nissan X-Trail, which was reportedly stolen from a home in Murgon earlier that night,” the QPS spokesperson stated.

“The vehicle was later located burnt out on Wondai Road in Cherbourg.”

As a result of the assault, which police described as “serious”, the 70-year-old Wondai man was transported to Kingaroy Hospital, where he received treatment for non-life threatening head injuries.

The Queensland Police Service are calling on any neighbours, motorists or other residents of the area with information, CCTV or dashcam footage relating to the attempted burglary and assault to come forward.

QPS detectives continue to investigate the incident in the meantime.
