Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has today confirmed that the date the Indigenous Voice to Parliament referendum goes to the vote will be 14 October.
Mr Albanese spoke to the nation during an event at the Playford Civic Centre in Elizabeth in Adelaide’s north this morning, Wednesday 30 August.
“On that day, every Australian will have a once-in-a-generation chance to bring our country together,” the Prime Minister said after announcing the date.
Australians will head to the polls approximately a month and a half from now to cast their vote on whether an Indigenous Voice to Parliament – an advisory body by and for First Nations people independent of any government organisation – should be enshrined in the country’s constitution.
The vote will consist of a set of simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ tick boxes.
To help voters make their decision ahead of the polling day, the Australian Electoral Commission has started distributing ‘referendum booklets’ listing cases and arguments by both the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ factions.
These booklets will be sent to post boxes across the nation over the coming days.
