It was dubbed the race of the decade and broke seven records, and many personal bests.

Dead Cow Gully Masters, held at the Walsh family farm near Nanango, started the race at 7am on Saturday, 21 June.

The final two runners, Phil Gore and Sam Harvey broke the world record of 116 loops early on Thursday morning, 26 June.

Gore went on to secure the new world record of 119 loops and win the 2025 Dead Cow Gully Masters, meanwhile Harvey completed 118 loops.

In the backyard ultra marathon, runners are challenged to complete a 6.7 kilometre loop within the hour, every hour. Runners continue running until they decide to drop out.

A group of 263 runners started the race on Saturday morning, with numbers dwindling as the hours ticked by.

The event’s popularity was fueled by its reputation as a world record track, after Phil Gore broke the world record at the masters event in 2023, clocking up a massive 102 loops.

By 7am on Sunday morning, 22 June, the first world record was broken.

A total of 87 gully runners completed loop 24, marking 100 miles and 24 hours of the race event.

This was the largest number of backyarders to complete 100 miles together, beating the previous record of 73 runners, held by Bigs Backyard in 2023.

On day three, Monday 23 June, three female runners, Jane McAlpine, Holly Ranson and Jennifer Russo completed loop 52, seeing the Australian and New Zealand female backyard ultra records fall.

Ranson also smashed the Australian female record by a large margin, completing 61 loops on Monday night.

New Zealander McAlpine finished with an impressive 53 loops to her name, whereas American Russo finished a new personal best of 76 loops.

On Thursday 26 June, the new world record, Australian record, and Dead Cow Gully course record was set at 119 loops by Australian runner Phil Gore.

Finally, the fresh New Zealand backyard ultramarathon record is 118 loops, held by Sam Harvey.
