The June South Burnett Parkinson’s Support Group Meeting was held at the Graham House in Murgon on Monday, 30 June.
The meeting was opened at 10.20am by Carmen and she welcomed the 19 attendees plus two representatives from SB Care, General Manager Shannon Exelby and Paul.
Shannon talked on several topics including aged care requirements for residents wishing to register with the institution and the various government changes which will be coming into effect from 1 November this year, although that date may be moved to next year, which will be advised.
Shannon also discussed issues concerning co-contributions and continuity of services when a person’s needs change.
Paul described various activities offered, which can be discussed with your care provider.
Carmen thanked the guest speakers for their visit and informative talks and they then left the meeting at 11.00am.
Apologies received for the meeting were: Ron and Emily, Terry, Rosemary.
Birthdays celebrated in the month of June were Darryl (80 th ), Stan, Charles (Merrilyn’s husband), and Gloria Bell (absent).
Birthday chocolates were also given to Lena (2nd July) and Bill (7th July).
A small quiz was passed around with the question: What is the best thing about ageing? Carmen asked the guest speaker Paul to choose the answer, which was written by Jan – “A lot of people are not given the privilege of ageing”.
Carmen expressed a heartfelt farewell to Phil Bishop who passed away on 4th June.
Jan raised the subject of a venue which would be available at no cost, for the meetings, which is the Baptist Church hall in Murgon.
Carmen said that this would be a good place for the Parkinson’s August meeting to be held.
Kerry had brought along a video on chair Yoga which he played for all to watch and read. These exercises are designed to strengthen the leg muscles as well as adding strength to the spine.
This visual demonstration shown on a portable TV was very informative and helpful. Kerry will re-run this video at the August meeting.
July’s meeting, which will be a brunch one, with soup and sandwiches, will be held on Monday 28th, at the Murgon RSL Sub-branch drop in centre at Stephens Street West, Murgon commencing at 10am.
