On 24 June, Kingaroy Writers Association held their annual meeting.

Reports were read from the president, secretary and treasurer. Nominations were called for office bearers for the coming year.

President John Tully, secretary Brad Butwell and treasurer Gabrielle Cavanagh were all re-elected.

Sandy Pratten was elected as vice president and Kath Lansdownes as assistant treasurer.

The general meeting then followed, with readings from members on the theme of poetry.

This proved to be extremely entertaining as even those who said they could not write poetry surprised themselves with beautiful, moving and humorous efforts.

The unusual words and epigrams always result in much amusement and discussion. Everyone loved the thought of ‘hurkle-durkling,’ which means ‘lying in bed doing nothing,’ a very inviting idea on these chilly winter mornings.

Our members come from all walks of life. The diverse backgrounds include a doctor, nurses, a pilot, a teacher, a public servant, a horse breeder/trainer, a jillaroo, and a mother of nine and farm caretaker.

We always welcome new members. So you can see that the stories vary greatly and if you’re looking for something new to try, why not come along and join us.

The group meets at the Kingaroy RSL on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month from 10am to 12 noon.

Contacts are:

Brad Butwell – 07 4162 5544

Gabrielle Cavanagh – 07 4162 2538
