Laying a wreath to remember

South Burnett councillor Jane Erkens felt privileged to attend a memorial service acknowledging the Korean War in Nanango on Sunday, 27 July.

Here’s her reflections on the event:

When I got the call from the Nanango RSL Executive members about an upcoming memorial service, I always feel very proud to be invited to represent the Nanango community at these events. I was also invited to give a short address on the Korean war and Australia’s involvement.

I learnt the Korean War was primarily a land war and that in September 1950 the Australian government sent the 3rd Battalion, the Royal Australian Regiment (3 RAR), followed by 1 RAR and 2 RAR.

While Australia did not introduce conscription for the Korean War this commitment required almost all of Australia’s regular infantry troops.

Another thing that brings great pride is the performance of our army cadets.

They always do us so proud at these events and it is amazing to see young people gain so much confidence through the discipline required to be part of this group.

The organisers certainly bring out the very best in these young people.

After Sunday’s event the group were all invited to the RSL Hall where the Burnett Pipes and Drums Band entertained those in attendance. The band will be travelling to Scotland to participate in the world pipes championship.

To lay a wreath on behalf of our community in remembrance of those who made such a great sacrifice for us is an honour.
