“We are urging residents to consider their care options and keep the Emergency Department for emergencies,” Health Service Chief Executive, Annette Scott PSM, said.
Darling Downs Health have seen a significant increase in patients presenting to the emergency department, resulting in non-urgent elective surgeries being cancelled.
8 non-urgent elective surgeries at Toowoomba Hospital on 22 and 23 July were rescheduled due to increased demand in emergency department presentations.
Health Service Chief Executive, Annette Scott PSM, said non-urgent category 2 and 3 elective surgeries were paused for 48 hours to enable us to respond to emergency presentations.
“Patients who were impacted were contacted personally to reschedule. All emergency surgeries and category 1 elective surgeries went ahead as scheduled.”
“Darling Downs Health has well-established systems in place to plan for and respond to high demand, which generally aligns with winter when we see more patients presenting to our hospitals and more patients needing hospitalisation for their symptoms” Ms Scott said.
“Toowoomba Hospital is currently at Tier 2 for capacity.
“We are urging residents to consider their care options and keep the Emergency Department for emergencies. For non-life-threatening urgent treatment, we encourage people to use one of the following services.”
