A large grass fire near the Murgon Hospital this afternoon has triggered a smoke warning from the Queensland Fire Department, urging people to stay inside and avoid the area.

A total of four QFD crews are at the scene of the fire on Houghton Street near the Hastings Street intersection, on the north-eastern edge of the Murgon Hospital grounds, with the first firefighters arriving just before 4pm on Thursday, 14 August.

According to a spokesperson for the QFD, on-scene firies are monitoring the edges of the fire.

No properties are at risk as a result of the flames, however the QFD has issued an advice-level warning to the entirety of the Murgon township given the high levels of smoke emitted by the blaze.

The Department urges locals to stay inside and close the doors and windows of their homes.

Murgon residents with respiratory issues are advised to keep their medication at hand.

Motorists in the vicinity of the fire are urged to avoid the area and not drive through any smoke as it may obscure their vision.

Drone pilots should also avoid the area as drones may hinder firefighters at work.

The QFD has urged Murgon residents to follow their bushfire survival plan now, or create a plan if they do not have one.
