July news from parkinson’s support group

The South Burnett Parkinson’s Support Group social meeting was held at the Murgon RSL Sub Branch drop-in centre on Monday, 28 July.

The meeting was opened at 10.10am by myself (Julie) in Carmen’s absence while Garry is undergoing surgery. We all sincerely wish Garry a successful outcome and a speedy recovery.

There were fifteen attendees in total and apologies were: Janette, Carmen and Garry, Margaret and Gary Long, Gloria Berry, Jan, David Black, Bev and Bill.

July birthdays were celebrated by Lena (2nd ), Bill (7th ), Terry (28th today), and Ron will enjoy his tomorrow (29th). Luckily I had thought to take some Maltesers from my fridge for birthday chocolates!

Discussion took place on possible venues for our Christmas meeting/social get together and lunch to be held on Monday, 24th November.

I will check out availability, menus and costs at five Murgon places and report back at the next meeting.

Stan advised that he has three dart boards which could be used for games on the day and instead of darts, balls which stick to the board surface are thrown instead.

Doug raised the topic of Parkinson’s DNA research and this was expanded upon by Kerry who said the use of patches instead of tablets was widely advertised.

Discussion took place on other illnesses and the general consensus was that exercise is highly beneficial physically and mentally for people suffering any kind of ailment.

At June’s meeting Kerry had brought along a video on chair Yoga which he played for all to watch and read.

These exercises are designed to strengthen the leg muscles as well as adding strength to the spine.

Kerry will re-run this video at the August meeting.

That meeting will be held on Monday 25th August at the Murgon Baptist Church Hall, 175 MacAlister Street commencing at 10am.

A delicious morning tea/brunch of cakes, sandwiches, sausage rolls and a choice of two soups was served.

Our thanks and appreciation go to the people at the Drop In Centre who provided the catering for this very tasty food.

After socialising and dining finished, goodbyes were exchanged and the meeting was closed at 11.50am.
