A car fire in Wattle Camp on Monday afternoon that threatened to spread to Cherbourg’s national park is now under control, firefighters reported.

Starting at around 3:58pm, a total of six Queensland Fire Department crews attended a vehicle fire on Birch Road in Wattle Camp.

The firefighters reported the flames from the burning car had spread onto the surrounding grass, with the QFD putting out an alert that the fire was moving north-east toward Cherbourg National Park.

The QFD managed to rein in the moving fire by 4:15pm, reporting the flames were no longer threatening the nearby forestry.

However as of writing the car that started the blaze was still burning, with firefighters working to extinguish the vehicle. No houses or other structures were under threat from the fire.

The earlier ‘Stay Informed’ warning from the QFD remains current, with those living in the area advised to keep on the lookout for any further information regarding the fire as conditions could change quickly.

Residents of Wattle Camp and surrounds are asked to stay indoors and keep any required respiratory medication close-by.
