Warning issued over large fire at MP Creek

A large bushfire east of Wondai has caused a mass deployment of firefighters this afternoon.

The Queensland Fire Department confirmed seven Rural Fire Service and Queensland Fire and Rescue crews are currently at the scene of a fire in MP Creek, with three more outfits on their way.

According to QFD’s spokesperson the fire broke out just before 2pm on Thursday, 11 September; the first firefighters arrived around 2:40pm.

The fire covers a large area around MP Creek Road; a map of fire ‘hotspots’ hosted by the Queensland Government indicates that around 1,000 hectares of land are affected.

The QFD reports parts of the fire are burning in “inaccessible country” including the Cushnie State Forest. A landholder in the area is reportedly assisting firefighters with heavy machinery to establish a firebreak in an effort to rein in the flames.

QFD reports no immediate threat to any structures in the area. As of writing the department is not planning to task any aerial support to the scene.

Residents of MP Creek as well as the neighbouring localities of Wilkesdale, Hivesville Tingoora and Wheatlands have received a warning to avoid smoke coming from the fire.

People living in the affected area are urged to stay indoors and follow their bushfire survival plan in the event the fire continues to grow.
