Police plan holiday safety blitz

Queensland Police have handed out over 3,700 traffic tickets to drivers of e-mobility devices throughout 2025, with officers launching a state-wide crackdown on illegal and unsafe riding to cap off the year.

On 3 November the QPS began its latest initiative, named Operation X-Ray Surety, which aims to take Queenslanders using devices like e-scooters and e-bikes in unsanctioned ways off the streets.

In announcing the new initiative, the QPS also published a list of all Traffic Infringement Notices handed out to non-compliant drivers between 1 January and 2 November 2025.

A total of 3,705 Queenslanders received traffic tickets over their operation of ‘personal mobility devices’ like e-bikes this year, with 2,290 – or 61 per cent – of all notices given due to riders not wearing helmets.

Riders also received notices due to excessive speed, disobeying road signs, using mobile phones and ‘doubling’ – the practice of having an additional passenger onboard when they are not allowed to do so.

Operation X-Ray Surety will run throughout the 2025 Christmas holiday period, concluding on 26 January 2026. The QPS disclosed it would particularly target young riders during the school holidays, pointing at several recent cases where children as young as 14 fell foul of the law.
