The Darling Downs Health region is on alert for measels after a case was confirmed at a Toowoomba hospital.
The Darling Downs Public Health Unit is warning locals to be alert for measles symptoms after a confirmed case visited St Vincent’s Private Hospital (Emergency Department) in Toowoomba while infectious.
The individual who was later diagnosed with measles, attended St Vincent’s Private Hospital Toowoomba (Emergency Department) on Thursday 22 January from 10am to 2.30pm.
Dr Liam Flynn, Executive Director Medical Services, said measles is “highly contagious and potentially serious,” urging anyone who may have been exposed to monitor for symptoms over the next three weeks.
Measles symptoms include fever, tiredness, runny nose, cough, sore red eyes, and a blotchy red rash that usually starts on the face before spreading.
Anyone who develops symptoms should phone their GP or call 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice and avoid public places to reduce the risk of spreading the virus.
Vaccination remains the best protection. The measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine is safe, effective and free for anyone born after 1966 who hasn’t had two doses.
