Supporters of Blackbutt’s Avocado Festival donned their exercise clothes and running shoes over the weekend, raising funds to start a weekly Parkrun event in the avo- and timber town.

The ‘Fun Butt Run’ – a part of Blackbutt’s Mother’s Day markets – kicked off in the early hours of Saturday 7 May at the town’s Brisbane Valley Rail Trail stop, with runners lining up to tackle distances of 2 or 5 kilometres at their own pace.

The money raised by the well over one dozen participants – $2 for under-12s and $5 for all others – will now be pooled to go towards an exciting project in Blackbutt’s future, according to Avocado Festival team member Sheena Lindholm.

“[It was] excellent for a first event – the sun might not have been out, but the morning was sure bright!” Sheena said.

“[Tonia Gillard], our coordinator. is passionate about getting a park run up and running,” she explained.

“This Fun Butt Run [was] to fundraise for it.

“Tonia (…) has done many Parkrun events across the state. She wants to see one in Blackbutt.

“There have been a few hurdles, but there is nothing stopping her and the Blackbutt Avocado Festival Committee getting it up and going now,” Sheena added.

After their successful run, participants could settle down and relax while browsing Blackbutt’s finest arts, crafts and foods at the town’s bazaar-style markets.

Young visitors enjoyed pony rides, face painting and a jumping castle, while music lovers were enraptured by the sweet tunes of musician Warren Gould.

A spokesperson for the Blackbutt Avocado Festival took to the group’s Facebook page after the successful event on Saturday morning, thanking everyone for attending.

“Thanks to everyone who came to the Fun Butt Run this morning,” they wrote.

“The weather was perfect and everyone enjoyed the morning meeting new friends and sharing our thoughts and enthusiasm for more fundraising for our Parkrun for Blackbutt,” they added.

“Watch this space as we had some great ideas.”
