Watch out for parthenium weeds

North Burnett agribusiness and landowners are being urged to keep a careful eye out for parthenium.

The weed is listed as a Category 3 Restricted Invasive Plant under the Biosecurity Act 2014.

In his weekly report, North Burnett Regional Council’s Mayor Les Hotz shared his concerns about the spread of parthenium in the region.

“After recent spring rain, parthenium plants have germinated and begun flowering in some locations in the region,” he said.

The council reported that this is the ideal time to treat infestations to help manage the spread before it sets seed.

The seeds can be further spread by water, vehicles, machinery, stock or feral animals.

Council reminds landowners and agribusiness oweners that the Biosecurity Act requires everyone to “take all reasonable and practical meansures to minimise the biosecurity risks” associated with invasive plants under their control.

A combination of control options are required to effectively treat parthenium.

North Burnett Council’s Biosecurity Officers will assist residents and land managers who notify Council of outbreaks on private and public lands.

These residents may also be eligible to receive a free bottle of herbicide to help with management on your land.
