Fires threaten Bundy-Burnett border area

Bundaberg region locals near the border to the North Burnett at Mount Perry have received warnings they should prepare to evacuate, with several large-scale bushfires burning at Doughboy, Nearum and Takilberan.

The Queensland Fire Department has declared three warning zones across the North Burnett and Bundaberg regions as of Monday afternoon, 6 October.

ALERT FOR DOUGHBOY FIRE

A large fire burning at Doughboy since 30 September has flared up again, triggering an ‘Advice’-level warning from the QFD.

Residents of Doughboy, Wonbah, Mount Perry and surround localities were told to stay informed as to the condition of the fire.

A total of 15 QFD crews are at the scene of the fire at time of writing, with a further two en route. Firefighting aircraft have joined the assault on the flames; no properties are currently at risk.

Locals in the warning area should remain indoors, avoid smoke and follow their bushfire survival plan, taking care not to fly drones or other aircraft in the warning zone as they could interfere with firefighting efforts.

PREPARE TO LEAVE, NEARUM

The Queensland Fire Department reported a “large fire” was burning near Nearum Road, Nearum in the Bundaberg region, since just before 3pm.

The flames are reportedly moving toward Grass Tree Hill and Tableland Roads and threatening some properties, triggering a contingent of ground- and airborne firefighting crews to attend the scene.

The QFD has issued a ‘Prepare to Leave’ warning for the area between Grass Tree Road, Grass Tree Hill Road, Tableland Road and Nearum Road.

Residents of the zone should decide on their means and route of evacuation in the event the fire encroaches on their location.

Those affected should secure any important documents, enough clothes for five days, necessary electronics, medications and any equipment needed to safely transport their pets.

To prevent flames from damaging their homes, locals in the warning area should move flammable items away from their houses as well as help others to do the same. Any embers burning around properties should be put out with water.

The QFD has warned roads in the area may be blocked as the fire moves, and that mobile phone, water and electricity services could also be impacted.

At time of writing neither Ergon Energy, Optus nor Telstra have declared any outages for the Nearum area.

PREPARE TO LEAVE, TAKILBERAN

A large fire burning near Gaeta Road in Takilberan north of Mount Perry has triggered a ‘prepare to leave’ warning by the Queensland Fire Department.

As of 3:43pm the QFD warns locals around Gaeta Road, Mooney Road and Habbermans Road to monitor the condition of a bushfire which has put some properties at risk.

Residents of the affected area should follow their bushfire survival plan, securing any necessary documents, electronics, medication and other goods before planning their potential escape route.

At time of writing no roads or essential services are affected by the fire but the QFD warns conditions may change swiftly.
